Email is the most commonly captured lead. Simply because it is undeniably the most cost effective and efficient marketing tool at your disposal.

Once you get a user to perform an action that opens a communication channel, you can send them special offers, updates, or even freebies to bring them back.

Who Should Start Generating Leads?

Whether you are a blogger, small or large business, or a hobbyist, you need to do lead generation. Basically if you care about growing your audience base, then you should start generating leads.

Many successful online marketers and bloggers will tell you that the biggest mistake they made was not starting an email list to capture leads earlier.

When Should I start Lead Generation?

Lead generation takes time and every moment you are not doing it you are losing potential customers.

You should start your lead generation efforts right away. Even if you are just starting out and not even open for business yet.

Having said that, let’s take a look at how to get started with lead generation in WordPress.

Getting Started with Lead Generation in WordPress

First, you will need a self-hosted WordPress.org website. If you don’t already have a WordPress site, then take a look at our step by step guide on how to start a WordPress blog.

After that you need to sign up with an email marketing service provider. These companies specialize in sending mass emails with an easy to use interface. We recommend using Constant Contact or AWeber.

Lead Generation in WordPress Using Comments

Comments are the easiest way to build user engagement. However, default WordPress comment system is not very efficient in bringing back the users who leave comments.

Let’s take a look at how you can capture leads from comment forms on your WordPress site.

By default, when a user submits comment on your website they get to see the same page again. There is nothing new on that page except for the preview of their own comment.

You can convert these visitors into subscribers by redirecting them to a different page on your WordPress site after they submit a comment. This could be a thank you page, special offer page, etc.

Upon activation, you need to visit Settings » Comment Hacks page and click on ‘Comment Redirect’ tab.

Select the page where you want to send first time commenters and then click on the save changes button.

Now all first time commenters on your WordPress site will be redirected to your selected page. You can optimize this page by adding an email signup form, offer a special discount, or anything else you want.

As we mentioned earlier, WordPress does not send any notifications to users after they leave a comment. The user will have to manually come back to your site to see if someone replied to their comment.

Upon activation, you need to visit Settings » Subscribe to Comments to configure the plugin settings.

Contact forms are the most common way to generate leads in WordPress. However, most contact form plugins for WordPress are either too difficult to use or do not integrate with your email service provider.

Another technique that you can use to boost sales is adding a redirect page upon a successful form submission.

WPForms allows you to easily redirect users to any page after they have submitted a form using the smart form confirmation feature.

Once you have created your form with the drag & drop form builder, click on the settings tab and then click on confirmation.

Once you have installed WPForms Pro, you need to visit WPForms » Addons page. Here you will find addons for different email service providers.

Go ahead and click on the Install Addon button next to MailChimp Addon.

WPForms will install the MailChimp Addon. You will need to click on the Activate button to start using the addon.

The next step is to connect WPForms to your MailChimp account. Visit WPForms » Settings page and then click on ‘Integrations’ tab.

You will see MailChimp listed as an integration. Clicking on it will allow you to enter your MailChimp API key and a Nickname for this account.

You can get your API key from your account on MailChimp website.

Click on connect to MailChimp button to continue. WPForms will now connect to your MailChimp account.

You are now ready to add email optin fields to your contact form.

Headover to WPForms » Add New page. This will launch WPForms form builder interface.

First you need to provide a title for your contact form and then select ‘Simple Contact Form’ from the list of available templates.

WPForms will now create a simple contact form for you. You can edit the fields by clicking on them. You can also add new fields by clicking on them in the left column.

Now, you need to click on the ‘Checkboxes’ field to add a newsletter signup checkbox. Clicking on the field will show you its settings.

Your form is almost ready. Now you just need to connect the form fields to your email list.

Click on ‘Marketing’ tab and then click on MailChimp. Create a new connection and provide it a name.

Mapping fields and adding conditional logic

WPForms will now load your MailChimp email list and the form fields you just created. Map the name and email address fields to the appropriate fields in your contact form.

Next, you need to check the box next to ‘Enable conditional logic’ option. This allows you to ONLY add users who opt-in to join your email list. This is very important. While you can easily add all users to your email list, the ones who opt-in are a better quality lead.

Go ahead and select the newsletter optin field you added as checkbox.

Contact forms are the most common way to boost lead generation in WordPress, but you can take it even further with personalized optin forms.

Many of you have asked us how to create a similar floating bar, so here it is. In this article, we will show you how to create a sticky floating footer bar in WordPress.

What is Floating Footer Bar?

A sticky floating footer bar allows you to prominently display your important content to users. This bar remains visible to users at all time, so they are more likely to click on it and discover more useful content.

In this article, we will show you two methods to add a sticky floating footer bar on your WordPress site. One uses a plugin while the other is a code method that we’re using on WPBeginner. You can choose the one you find easier to use.

Method 1: Manually Create Sticky Floating Footer Bar in WordPress

This method requires you to add code in your WordPress files. If you are new to adding code, then please take a look at our guide on how to paste snippets from web into WordPress.

First, you need to connect to your WordPress site using an FTP client or file manager in cPanel.

In your FTP client, you need to locate the footer.php file in your WordPress theme folder and download it to your desktop. It would be located at a path like this:

/wp-content/themes/your-theme-folder/

Next, you need to open the footer.php file in a plain text editor like Notepad and add the following code just before the </body> tag.

You can add as many list items as you want. We will show you how to randomly rotate them on each page load.

The next step is adding the CSS styles.

You can add CSS to your WordPress theme’s style.css file or use the Simple Custom CSS plugin.

After adding the CSS, you may not be able to see the changes on your website. This is because we have set the display for items in our list to none.

Next, we will use jQuery to randomly display one item from our list on each page load.

You need to open a plain text editor like Notepad on your computer and add this code to a blank file:

Once you are done, you need to save this file as floatingbar.js on your desktop.

Now open your FTP client and connect to your web server. Go to your theme folder and locate js folder. It would be at a path like this:

/wp-content/themes/your-theme-folder/js

If there is no js folder in your theme directory, then you need to create one.

Now you need to upload floatingbar.js file you created earlier to the js folder you just created.

The next step is to enqueue (load) the JavaScript file in your WordPress theme.

Paste this code in your theme’s functions.php file or a site-specific plugin.

That’s all, you can now visit your website to see the floating footer bar in action. Reload the page a couple of times to see footer bar randomly showing different items from your list.

The benefit of using this method is that you get to randomly rotate multiple links in the floating footer bar like we’re doing.

However the difficulty is that you need to add code. Furthermore, you can’t use this floating bar for other things without doing too much CSS customizations.

Method 2: Using OptinMontser to Add Floating Footer Bar in WordPress

This plugins just acts as a connector between your WordPress site and OptinMonster.

Upon activation, the plugin will add a new menu item labeled OptinMonster to your WordPress admin bar. Clicking on it will take you to plugin’s settings page.

You will be asked to provide your OptinMonster API username and key. You can get these keys from your OptinMonster account.

Copy and paste the keys into the plugin settings and click on ‘Connect to OptinMonster’ button. The plugin will now connect your WordPress site to your OptinMonster account.

Next, you need to click on the ‘Create New Optin’ button.

This will take you to ‘Create New Optin’ page on OptinMonster website.

First you need to provide a title for your Optin Campaign and select a website where you will be using this optin. If your site is not listed then click on ‘Add a new website’ link.

Next, you can click on the Floating bar under the ‘Select your optin type’ to use templates available to use as a floating bar.

You can customize all these templates to your own liking. Select the one that looks closest to what you have in mind.

As soon as you select a template, OptinMonster will launch their design customizer. It is a point-and-click builder where you can configure appearance and settings for your optin.

When you are done configuring the appearance of your optin, be sure to click on the save button.

While these are called optins, they don’t always have to be. You can use the Yes / No feature to add the button to view a blog post or claim a special discount.

When you first create your floating bar, it’s Paused by default.

Once you’ve finished configuring it, hover over to the status bar in the top menu and choose Start Campaign.

Your floating bar is now ready to be added to your WordPress site.

Return to the admin area of your WordPress site and visit OptinMonster » Optins. You will see your optin listed here. If you don’t see it, then click on Refresh Optins button and the plugin will display it.

Click on the ‘Edit output settings’ link to continue.

On the next page, check the box next to ‘Enable optin on site’ option and then click on the save settings.

You can also use the Advanced option to only show the floating bar on specific posts, pages, categories, and other areas.

That’s all, floating footer bar optin is now live on your WordPress site.
