So you have bought a shiny new digital camera and want to share your photos with the world? But how do you add those images as a gallery in grid and columns instead of one picture at a time? In this article, we will show you how to easily create an image gallery in WordPress that makes your photos look even better.

How to create an image gallery in WordPress

WordPress makes it super easy to add images to your blog posts and pages. You just click on the Add Media button and upload your images.

However, if you are adding multiple images, then all those images will appear one after another. It doesn’t look great, and your users will have to scroll a lot to view them all.

Adding multiple images in WordPress without creating a gallery

By creating a gallery, you can display images in a grid layout with columns and rows. You can show thumbnails for your images, and users can click on them to see the full image.

This way you will be able to show more photos in less space, and it will look a lot more professional.

Preview of a gallery

WordPress actually comes with a built-in gallery feature that many users are not aware of. You can also use WordPress plugins to create even more robust image galleries that look great on all devices and screen sizes.

Having said that, let’s take a look at how to easily create an image gallery in WordPress.

Method 1. Create an Image Gallery without a Plugin

WordPress comes with a built-in feature that lets you create a gallery. This feature is very basic and does not have many options, but it gets the job done.

Here is how you would create an image gallery in WordPress without using a plugin.

First, you would need to edit the post or page where you want to add the image gallery. On the post edit screen, click on the ‘Add Media’ button to upload your images.

Click on add media button to upload your images

This will bring up the WordPress media uploader where you can click on ‘Select files’ button to upload your photos. You can also select photos you have previously uploaded from media library.

After uploading and selecting your images click on the create gallery link from the left column..

Next, you need to click on the ‘Create a new gallery’ button.

Create new gallery button

Media uploader will now show your selected images with gallery settings. You can add captions to each image in your gallery.

You can also select how you want the images to be linked, number of columns, and image size to use in gallery.

WordPress gallery settings

Once you are done, you can click on the ‘Insert gallery’ button.

This will close the media uploader popup, and you will be able to see your image gallery in post editor.

Image gallery in post editor

You can now save or publish the post/page, and visit your website to see your image gallery in action.

Default WordPress gallery preview

Wasn’t that quick and easy? It looks pretty too. However, if you create image galleries regularly, then you will soon notice that it lacks certain important features.

For example, your images will open in a new page and users will have to click on the back button to view the gallery again. It is not fully mobile-responsive, and your gallery’s appearance depends on your theme. In most cases you get just one very generic style.

Last but not least, you can’t organize your galleries into albums, tag your images, etc.

If you want to add more professional looking image galleries on your site, then you should use this next method.

Method 2. Create an Image Gallery Using Envira

For this method, we will be using the Envira Gallery plugin. It is the best WordPress gallery plugin in the market.

Envira allows you to easily create fully-responsive, beautiful, and modern image galleries in WordPress. It is super fast and comes with many features like lightbox popup, easy image navigation, drag and drop builder, and professional gallery templates.

Let’s get started.

First thing you need to do is install and activate the Envira Gallery plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, you need to visit the Envira Gallery » Settings page to enter your license key. You can get this key from your account on Envira Gallery website.

Envira Gallery license

After verifying your license key, you can head over to Envira Gallery » Add New page to create your first gallery.

Creating a new gallery in Envira

First you need to provide a title for your gallery and then click on ‘Select files from computer’ button to upload your images.

You can also select files from your WordPress media library by clicking on ‘Select files from other sources’ button.

Once you upload your images, they will appear in the images section.

Images in your Envira Gallery

You can click the pencil icon on a image to add caption, title, and alt text to each image.

Image meta data

Next, you need to click on the ‘Config’ tab.

Here you can change your gallery settings like number of columns, title and caption positioning, margins, heights, thumbnail sizes, image dimensions, etc.

Configure gallery settings

After that, you need to click on the lightbox tab.

The lightbox popup allows users to enlarge images and browse them without ever leaving the page.

The default settings will work very well for most websites, but you can review the options and change them if you like.

lightbox settings

You can now publish your gallery which will make it available to be added anywhere on your WordPress site.

Next, you need to edit a post or page where you want to display your gallery.

On the post edit screen, you will notice the new ‘Add Gallery’ button above the post editor.

Add gallery button

Clicking on it will bring up a popup where you can select the gallery you just created. Simply click to select the gallery and then click on the insert button.

Select and insert gallery

You will see a shortcode for the gallery appear in your post editor.

You can now save and publish your post. After that visit your website to see it in action.

When you click on an image, it will open the image in the lightbox popup. You can browse images in the lightbox by pressing the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard.

If you ever had a question about WordPress images, then you’re in luck. In this article, we will cover the most common image issues in WordPress and how to fix them.

  2. How to Align Image to the Left or Right in WordPress?
  3. How to Add Caption below Images?
  4. How to Display Photos in Columns and Rows?
  5. Create Beautiful Responsive Image Galleries in WordPress

  14. How to Require Featured Image for Posts in WordPress?
  15. How to Set a Default Featured Image in WordPress?
  16. How to Remove the Default Image Link in WordPress?

Let’s start with the most obvious one.

1. How to Upload images in WordPress?

Image uploads in WordPress are handled by the Media uploader.

You can insert an image in your content by clicking on the ‘Add Media’ button in post or page edit screen.

Upload images when editing a post or page in WordPress

You can also directly upload images to ‘Media’ and use them later in a post or a page.

You will need to visit Media » Add New page to upload your image(s). Simply click on the select file buttons and then select the images from your computer that you want to upload.

Add new image directly to WordPress media library

2. How to Align Image to the Left or Right in WordPress?

You may have noticed how some popular blogs use images with text wrapped around them. This is done by using the align feature.

You can choose image alignment when uploading an image and before inserting it into your post.

alignment

Alternately, you can also use the align buttons using the image toolbar right inside post editor.

Click on the image to select it, and then click on the align buttons to adjust the alignment.

3. How to Add Caption below Images?

WordPress allows you to easily add caption for images. After you upload an image, WordPress media uploader allows you to provide image title, description, and caption.

Adding caption to an image before inserting it into a post

You can also add captions to existing images by editing the image.

4. How to Display Photos in Columns and Rows?

Often users ask us how to neatly display photos in columns and rows.

Let’s say you want to share photos of a birthday party, or vacation photos. You can add them one by one into a post, but this will look like a lengthy list of images.

The better way to group your photos is by creating image galleries.

Simply upload your images when editing a post or page.

In the media uploader select the images you want to show and click on the ‘Create Gallery’ link in the left column.

Create a basic image gallery in WordPress

Next, you need to click on the ‘Add new gallery’ button at the bottom right corner of the media uploader.

WordPress will now show you gallery settings.

Gallery settings

You can choose how to link to an image, number of columns, size of gallery images, etc.

Once you are done, click on the ‘Insert Gallery’ button to finish.

For more detailed instructions see our guide on how to create an image gallery in WordPress.

5. Create Beautiful Responsive Image Galleries in WordPress

Envira Gallery

You will notice that the default WordPress image galleries don’t look so great on mobile. They are also not very easy to browse.

If you often upload images and photographs to your WordPress site, then you will need a proper WordPress photo gallery plugin.

We recommend using Envira Gallery. It allows you to easily create beautiful and fully mobile friendly image galleries on your WordPress site.

The best part is that it adds additional functionality like Albums, gallery templates, social sharing abilities, slideshows, watermarking, pagination, password protection, tagging, fullscreen view, and much more.

See our guide on how to easily create responsive WordPress image galleries with Envira for full instructions.

6. How to Fix Missing Post Thumbnails / Featured Image?

Most WordPress themes allow you to prominently display a featured image with your articles. Here is how to set a featured image in WordPress to avoid missing thumbnails.

Set featured image for a post in WordPress

If you do not see a featured image meta box in your post edit area, then click on Screen Options button on the top right corner of the screen and check the featured image check box.

Add featured image box

Now, you can click on ‘Set Featured Image’ link to upload your post thumbnail.

After uploading the image, you need to click on the Set Featured Image button.

You will be able to see your post thumbnail in the featured image meta box like this:

Preview of featured image

For more details, see our guide on how to add featured image or post thumbnail in WordPress.

7. How to Fix Featured Image Appearing Twice Issue?

Inserting featured image inside post editor is a common mistake made by beginners.

Once you set a featured image, you don’t need to insert it into the post editor along with your post content.

Doing so, will make your featured image appear twice. Once as the featured image, and once as an image inside the post.

Duplicate featured image in WordPress post

You can add other images in your post, but your featured image goes in the featured image box.

For more details, see our guide on how to fix featured image appearing twice in WordPress posts.

8. Image too Big? How to Crop Images in WordPress?

When you are uploading images from your phone or camera they are usually too big.

WordPress automatically creates small, medium, and large image sizes for your original upload. But sometimes you may need to crop the image in a different size.

WordPress is no Photoshop, but it comes with some basic image editing features like scale, crop, flip and rotate images.

Go to Media » Add New and upload your image. After uploading the image, you will see an Edit link next to the uploaded image.

Clicking on it will open the Edit Media screen where you will see an Edit Image button right below the image. This will open the WordPress image editor.

Editing image in WordPress

On the image editor screen, you will see buttons to perform some basic image editing tasks such as cropping, rotating, resizing, etc.

For more detailed instructions see our guide on how to crop, rotate, scale, and flip images in WordPress.

9. How to Add a Header Image in WordPress?

A header image in WordPress is a theme feature. Many WordPress free and premium themes comes with support for header image.

You can upload your own custom header image from the Appearance » Customize. WordPress will let you know the size requirements for the header image.

Adding a header image to your WordPress theme

If you upload an image of the exact size, then it will be used as is. However, if you upload an image of a larger or different size, then you will be prompted to crop the image to fit the header image size.

10. How to Add a Background Image in WordPress?

Just like the custom header image, custom background image is also a WordPress theme feature. Many WordPress themes come with support for custom background images.

Visit Appearance » Customize to launch the theme customizer. If you can see the Background Image option, then your theme has support for custom backgrounds.

Adding a custom background image in WordPress

Simply upload an image from your computer or choose one from the media library. Once you have chosen the image you will be able to see the preview and other background image options.

You can tile the image, make it a fixed background, or allow it to be scrolled. Save your changes and preview your website.

11. How to Find Free Images for Your WordPress Blog Posts?

Finding images for blog posts

Images can make your articles stand out. However, you must respect copyrights of other people and try to find images that you are legally allowed to use.

We are often asked by our readers about how to find best royalty free images to use in their posts?

There are many websites where you can find free images to use. However, you will soon notice that images on those sites look overused and generic.

See our list of the best sources for free public domain and CC0-licensed images on the internet.

12. How to Tag Images in WordPress?

If you run a photography blog, then you will notice that WordPress does not allow you to sort photos and images.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could add tags to your images, so that you and your users can easily browse them?

Luckily, there are some great plugins that allow you to do just that.

For a photography related blog, the best option is to use Envira Gallery’s Tags addon.

Envira Gallery allows you to create beautiful, mobile-ready, photo galleries in WordPress. Using tags, your users can easily filter and sort photos without even reloading a page.

Adding tag filtering in WordPress with Envira Gallery's Tags addon

If you are not using Envira Gallery, then you can try WP MediaTagger plugin.

13. How to Import External Images in WordPress?

This question often comes up when you are migrating your site to WordPress. Some images on your website may still be pointing to older location.

Specially users importing blogs from Blogger, Squarespace, or WordPress.com may face this problem.

While the images on your site may appear correctly, they are still loading from external source. To solve this issue, all you need to do is install and activate Import External Images plugin.

It will check your posts for external images and show all of them. You can then simply import all those images with the click of a button.

Import external images plugin settings

For detailed instructions, see our guide on how to import external images in WordPress.

14. How to Require Featured Image for Posts in WordPress?

When running a multi-author site in WordPress, some of your authors may not be familiar with the featured image functionality.

In this case, you may want to remind yourself or your users to upload a featured image whenever they are submitting a post in WordPress.

You can do this by installing and activating the Require Featured Image plugin.

Once activated, the plugin will display a notification box in the post edit area, informing users that this post requires a featured image.

Require featured image in WordPress

You and your users will be able to save posts as drafts, but you cannot publish the post until you add a featured image.

See our article on how to require featured images for posts in WordPress for more instructions.

15. How to Set a Default Featured Image in WordPress?

Finding the perfect featured image for every post or article is a tough task. Sometimes you may not want to add a featured image to a post, but your theme may look awkward without a featured image.

This is where a default featured image can come in handy. A default featured image is used when an article does not have a featured image of its own.

You can set a default fallback image by manually adding code in your theme’s functions.php file or you can set default featured image plugin.

Either way, you will have a branded fall back image, that does not look bad and fits nicely on your site.

WordPress creates multiple copies of an image upload in different sizes. By default it adds a link to the original image file.

You can set default link to ‘none’ to remove the link, but doing it manually each time you upload an image is a little annoying.

Unlink images by default in WordPress

You can stop WordPress from adding a link by adding this code in your theme’s functions.php file or a site-specific plugin.

function wpb_imagelink_setup() {
	$image_set = get_option( 'image_default_link_type' );

	if ($image_set !== 'none') {
		update_option('image_default_link_type', 'none');
	}
}
add_action('admin_init', 'wpb_imagelink_setup', 10);

For more details, see our guide on how to automatically remove default image links in WordPress.

Are you looking for a WordPress photo gallery plugin for your site? Tired of going through thousands of WordPress gallery plugins to see which one is the best? That’s why we did the research for you. In this article, we will compare the top 3 WordPress photo gallery plugins based on their speed, performance, ease of use, and over all features. The goal is to find out which is the best WordPress photo gallery plugin.

A photo gallery in a WordPress website

Many WordPress users create photo galleries at one point or another. That’s why WordPress comes with a built-in gallery feature. However, the default gallery lacks functionality and aesthetic appeal that most users want. That’s why we’re often asked which is the best WordPress gallery plugin. In this article, we will try to answer that question by comparing the best WordPress gallery plugins.

Choosing the right WordPress photo gallery plugin can not only improve the visual appeal of your photo galleries, but it also improves the overall user experience on your site.

What is Wrong With Most WordPress Photo Gallery Plugins?

The biggest problem with most WordPress gallery plugins is that they’re slow. If it is not well-coded, then a gallery can significantly slow down your website even if you have good WordPress hosting.

The other problem with WordPress gallery plugins is ease of use. Most of them are bloated with features and are overly complicated for beginners to get started with. Too many features does not always mean it’s a good product.

Last but not least, you want to make sure that your WordPress gallery plugin is responsive. A lot of them are not.

A perfect WordPress gallery plugin should be fast, easy to use, and have all the necessary features that you need to create beautiful photo galleries (such as lightboxes, image navigation, albums, pagination, etc). This allows for great user experience and helps improve your SEO as well.

So how do you go through all the WordPress gallery plugins and check for all this? Well you don’t have to. We did the research for you and below are our results for the best WordPress photo gallery plugins.

Our Top Contenders for Best WordPress Photo Gallery Plugin

We have picked the most popular WordPress photo gallery plugins in the market. In our comparison, we will look for speed, features, ease of use, and reliability. Here are the top 3 WordPress gallery plugins that most experts recommend:

Let’s get started with our comparison. First category is speed.

Speed

Speed is crucial when you are choosing a WordPress photo gallery plugin. Not only does it affect SEO, but it also affects user experience on your site.

If you are using a gallery plugin for a portfolio or photography site, then you simply cannot afford to compromise on speed. We ran a test on the plugins using the same images without modifying any default settings. Below are our results:

Gallery Plugin Page Load time Requests Page size
Envira Gallery 1.08 secs 24 1MB
Foo Gallery 1.89 secs 23 357.1KB
NextGEN 1.88 secs 33 518KB

As you can see in the above results, Envira Gallery came out as the fastest loading WordPress gallery plugin despite the fact that the page size was nearly double of NextGEN and Foo Gallery.

The reason why Enivra Gallery is the fastest is because it’s well coded and highly optimized for speed.

If you want a high performance fast WordPress site, then Envira is the photo gallery plugin for you.

Ease of Use

Creating image galleries is not as simple as uploading a single image to your posts. You need to choose layouts, select columns, add thumbnail sizes, choose lightbox and animations. Most beginners would find these things quite overwhelming. The goal here is to find a WordPress photo gallery plugin that is powerful and beginner friendly at the same time.

Envira Gallery

Envira Gallery follows and adheres to the WordPress coding standards and best practices. It provides a user interface that seamlessly blends into your WordPress admin area. Creating a new gallery is very similar to creating a new post in WordPress which makes it extremely beginner friendly.

Envira Gallery user interface

When you create a gallery, you are immediately shown the shortcode that you can use to add the gallery in any WordPress post or page. Envira Gallery also adds a button right next to the media upload button above the post editor that you can use to quickly add any gallery or album in your post / page.

Aside from that Envira Gallery also shows you the template tag that you can use it in your WordPress templates. This comes particularly handy if you are developing a site for a client and want to include galleries straight into theme files.

Foo Gallery

Foo Gallery takes the similar approach as Envira Gallery. It makes it easier for you to create photo gallery using a simple user interface that looks and feels like WordPress.

Foo Gallery user interface

Foo Gallery also adds a button on top of the post editor making it extremely simple for you to add galleries into any posts/pages.

Unlike Envira Gallery, Foo Gallery does not show the template tag to insert your galleries into theme files or templates.

NextGEN Gallery

NextGEN is a little different than our other two contenders. Instead of using the built in WordPress features, NextGEN brings its own user interface, database tables, and separate folders to store your images. This is why NextGEN user interface looks a bit complicated in WordPress.

NextGEN Gallery user interface

It will take users sometime to understand how to upload images and create a gallery. They will also find it a bit difficult to add the gallery into post/page.

NextGEN adds a button into WordPress visual editor, but if you are using the text editor, then you will not see any button.

Winner: We found Envira Gallery to be the easiest out of all. Foo Gallery is a very close second. NextGEN is not quick and easy to use and we feel that users will struggle with it a bit in the beginning.

Features

In order to create a beautiful photo gallery, you need functionality like lightboxes, full-screen mode, albums, pagination, navigation, slideshow, password protection, EXIF metadata, social media sharing, and more.

However it’s important to remember that too many features can slow down your site, so let’s take a look at how our contenders handle the balance in features and functionality.

Envira Gallery

Envira Gallery is built with a mobile first approach. This means that it is fully responsive out of the box.

It allows you to easily choose thumbnail sizes, animations, gallery layouts, add meta tags for your images all from the single user interface.

Apart from the built-in features, there are loads of features that you can add by installing addons such as: gallery templates, social sharing, videos, password protection, image protection, albums, slideshow, pinterest, deeplinking, fullscreen mode, image tags, and many more.

Foo Gallery

Foo Gallery comes with a great set of features. It is not mobile responsive out of the box, but you can select the responsive template to add a responsive photo gallery.

Another feature that we missed is the lightbox. You can install the free Foobox plugin to add lightbox functionality, but we felt that it should have been packaged with the core gallery plugin.

Foo Gallery also comes with extensions that you can install to add more features such as custom branding, cube effect, lightbox, and more.

NextGEN Gallery

NextGEN Gallery is the oldest of all three plugins, and it comes with an extensive list of features.

Many of the features that are available as addons in Envira and Foo, are available out of the box in NextGEN gallery. There are also pro and plus paid upgrades which provide additional features.

NextGEN is loaded with features, but many of these features require certain level of familiarity with the plugin. This requires spending time, reading documentation, and posting questions in support forums.

Winner NextGEN is a clear winner when it comes to total feature count. Foo Gallery has some essential features missing in the out-of-the-box experience. Envira Gallery comes with just the right balance of features and functionality combined with ease of use.

Compatability

WordPress provides you the freedom to move your site from one web host to another and even to different competitors.

We need to see if you can easily import/export and backup your photo gallery data.

Envira

Envira stores all your photo galleries as custom post types in the WordPress database. It stores your media files using the default WordPress media location. This means if you backup your WordPress site, you will have all Envira Gallery data backedup.

Envira also allows you to import/export your individual galleries. This means that you can move a single gallery from one WordPress site to another.

Envira Gallery allows you to import/export photo galleries

When you move your WordPress site, Envira will automatically detect it and will show you an option to fix the migration.

All these features make Envira Gallery the most reliable photo gallery plugin for WordPress.

Foo Gallery

Similar to Envira, Foo Gallery also stores your galleries as custom post types in the WordPress database. If you backup your WordPress site, then you will have a Foo Gallery data backup as well.

However if you just want to export individual galleries, then there is no option for that because the plugin doesn’t come with an import / export feature.

NextGEN Gallery

NextGEN gallery does not come with import/export feature. Since it stores your data in separate database tables, this means you will need to configure your WordPress backup plugin to include those tables.

NextGEN also stores your images in a separate folder. If you want to create a backup for them, then you will need to download the folder separately to your computer.

Both Envira and FooGallery offers NextGen importers to make it easy for users to switch to their platform.

Winner Enivra Gallery offers the most comprehensive set of tools to import/export your photo galleries.

Pricing

All three plugins have free versions available in the WordPress plugin directory. All three of them have paid upgrades available with more features. The pricing of your photo gallery plugin will depend on which plan you want to use for any of these plugins. You can choose a plan based on the features you need after trying the free versions.

Winner: No clear winners here – the pricing of products will vary based on what features you need and plan that you select.

Conclusion

Envira Gallery is the best WordPress photo gallery plugin. It is extremely fast, simple to use, packed with all the essential features, and is fully mobile responsive. Photo galleries created with Envira Gallery are stunningly beautiful and blazing fast at the same time.
